What's the Big News?
Tom has returned from Dublin. I have returned from NYC where my family and friends celebrated my Mom's birthday. I have stepped up my search for employment. The NW Flower and Garden Show starts tomorrow. Tonight I'm planning to attend a Jazz Concert. I've got work that has to get down for NARGS today.
What's new or updated on Alwanza?
My blogs now have an RSS feed. Also, thanks to Tom, I now know that the IE warning bar - about ActiveX and scripting, that has plagued most of my webpages, is due to my perfectly safe use of a javascript 'eval' function. I'm annoyed; but I'm rewriting my javascript on EVERY page that has a button roll-over (almost every page on Alwanza.com) because I'd rather not even give the impression that my code is unsafe.
Other than the RSS feed, I haven't added much to Alwanza.com in the past month, because my attention has been on Alwanza.net.
I need to fix my music pop-up window javascript code so that it works correctly in Opera. Right now it is closing the parent window. I suspect it is the same issue that I fixed for IE, where the code closes a parent window if a function is trying to close a child window that isn't open. I want to come up with an elegant way to handle this for all browsers but I haven't figured it out yet.
What hi-tech projects am I working on?
I'm doing more system administration and more programming on my home network and personal websites than I ever imagined I would. I'm creating another mini-application that allows authenticated users to upload and download files.
What else is going on in my life?
I'm working on getting back into an exercise routine. I'm still strengthening my left leg.
Any nature observances of interest?
It hasn't felt like real winter in a while here. We had some frost in late November and early December, but all of January was well above freezing. We've had rain, overcast, even some sun; but the only flurries we have had so far were early in December and lasted just an hour or so.
The sarcococca and viburnum bodnantense are blooming and very fragrant. I haven't seen a hummingbird in a few weeks. The spotted towhees, marsh wren and Bewick's wren are regular visitors; and the juncos and chick-a-dees (black-capped and chestnut-backed) live here. The clematis armandii has buds. The camellia bushes have disappointed me this year with no blooms at all.
